CEONet Retreat 2020

Weaving: Strengthening the Essential Social Fabric of Place

April 3-5, 2020

Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center, Detroit, MI

About CEONet

Community Foundation CEOs are at the forefront of building connections within and for their community – with local leaders, nonprofit organizations, donors, resident groups, government entities and regional and national stakeholders. With the help of board members, staff and local volunteers, CEOs bring these actors together as needed and leverage action, resources and collaboration to catalyze and create positive impact in their communities.

CEOs face a set of challenges and responsibilities that are unique from other foundation staff, who generally have more specialized jobs. Besides being chief strategist and leader for the board and staff, CEOs must stay abreast of local, state and national issues/trends; identify good practice for managing and operating the community foundation; and spot and adapt the latest innovations and thinking on how to build strong, healthy and vibrant communities – and the foundation’s role in it.

CEONet is a national network of community foundation CEOs that help each other do their job. It facilitates useful learning from peer CEOs and from issue and organizational changemakers. It provides a ready and vital network of colleagues who offer mutual support and strengthen peer CEOs in their unique roles.

CEONet Retreat 2020

Weaving: Strengthening the Essential Social Fabric of Place

The CEONet Retreat held in conjunction with the CFUnited Conference invites CEOs from across the country to participate in a one-and-a-half-day intensive exchange exploring our core role in the community. Designed in partnership with the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group, the retreat will feature:

David Brooks

What Is At Our Core?

CEONet Reboot

Networking and Open Exchange

David Brooks

Best-selling author, New York Times Op-Ed columnist, commentator and founder of Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute – will keynote the retreat. He will introduce the concept of “weaving” and its importance as a cultural movement in repairing the frayed distrust, division and exclusion threads in our country’s and communities’ social fabric. In the ensuing discussion with David and each other, CEOs will address what community foundations can do to be weavers and to support and “walk with” weavers in their communities.

What is at Our Core?

To prime our discussion with David Brooks, Janet Topolsky of the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group will facilitate a story, reflection and exchange session exploring historic, current and aspirational answers to the question of “What is the core purpose and function of community foundations?”

CEONet Reboot

The Retreat Organizing Committee will unveil a proposal for a new CEONet structure – similar to AdNet, CommA and ProNet affinity groups for community foundation professionals. There will a be an opportunity for participants to provide input on the structure, purpose and activities of a new and enhanced CEONet.

Networking and Open Exchange

The retreat will include an optional networking social and dinner on Friday night, April 3; breakfast, lunch and reception on Saturday, April 4; and breakfast on Sunday, April 5.
